The Wedding Banquet
(Tune: Creedence Clearwater Revival ‘Down on the Corner’) Do you like stories? Jesus told lots of stories to tell us what God’s Kingdom is like and this one’s about… (puppet, interrupting)… About a party that I’m throwing for some honoured friends of mine. Invite children to clap. I’m gonna throw a party, I’ve invited all my friends, It’s gonna be a big one, The celebration will never end. Band is gonna play, There’ll be fun for young and old, The best food in the country, Served up on plates of gold. (Spoken): You want to know where? Come down round the corner, Straight to the end of the street, Put on your finest party clothes, And don’t forget to wash your feet. (Looking behind): Are we going guys? Now everything is ready, The guests should be coming now, Chefs are making gravy, To put on the roasted cow. Look down to the corner, Out along the street, Can you see the guests arriving? Dressed up and looking neat? (Spoken): Nope funny no one coming yet, but here’s the postie with a lot of letters. What’s this? Sorry I can’t come after all, I’ve just got married. Sorry to have to tell you at the last minute, I’ve just bought a new 4WD and have to take it for a run. Sorry I can’t come to the party I’ve just bought a new apartment block and have to check it out. What? No one coming? But the food will all be wasted, And I’ll still have to pay the band, So go into town, call ANYONE, Go right through the land. Go out to the corner, Out on the street, Where all the poor and homeless folk Are most likely to meet. If there’s still some empty places Then go and bring in more, The party’s gonna be like nothing that You’ve ever seen before.
