Grandmothers

GRANDMOTHERS
A third-grade girl wrote a report on what a grandmother is. Here's a portion of her essay:
"A grandmother is a lady who has no children of her own. She likes other people's little girls. A grandfather is a man grandmother. He goes for walks with the boys, and then talks about fishing, tractors and things like that.... Grandmothers don't have to do anything but be there. They're old so they shouldn't play hard or run. It is enough if they take us to the market where the pretend horses are and have lots of dimes ready, or if they take us for walks and slow down passing things like pretty leaves or caterpillars. They never say, 'Hurry Up.'
"Usually they are fat, but not too fat to tie your shoes. They wear glasses and funny underwear. They can take their teeth and gums off. They don't have to be smart, but they can answer questions like why dogs hate cats and how come God isn't married. When they read to us, they don't skip words or mind if it is the same story over again and again. Everybody should try to have one, especially if you don't have a television, because grandmothers are the only grownups who got time."

Here are some questions about gratitude or being thankful you might like to share with your family.
1. Is there someone in this room you are thankful for?
2. What is your favourite animal? Why are you grateful that it is part of God's creation?
3. Did anyone do anything nice for you in the last few days?
4. Did you see someone else do something caring for another person?
5. What is your favourite place inside and outside your home? Why are they special to you?
6. What are your 3 favourite foods? Tell us about a time you enjoyed eating one of them.
7. Did something make you laugh today? What was it ?
8.
What have you been given or what do you already have in your life that you are grateful for?
9.
Tell us about a time today when you gave your best effort?
10. Share something you think you could give some extra effort to show improvement.
11. What do you think is happening in the picture of the cat and dog below?

Reaching Out At Easter

Reaching out at Easter
You may get your group of children or your family to think of ways in which they can reach out ot others with the hope that Easter brings.
  • Make some home made biscuits. Put a cross made of icing on the top and give them to someone in your family or friend who needs some encouragement.
  • Get some bulbs which are in flower as a reminder of new life. Make your own Easter wrapping paper around the flower pot and give them as gift to a neighbour or friend.
  • Attach a homemade Easter card (hand drawn or take a photo) which simply explains the Easter message.
  • Visit a nursing home or people who are shut in and don’t get our much. Perhaps take a gift to those who have lost loved ones during the last year.
  • Put up an Easter poster in your home.
  • As family make up a special ‘Easter Email ‘with some family news, a photo or two and include a bible verse or some thoughts about what Easter means to you. Send the email to your family and friends.
  • As family or group make up a special Easter Grace to be said before meals over Easter.
  • Learn how to make Palm crosses and give them away as bookmarks to people.
  • Organise a Christian Passover meal and invite your neighbour
  • Invite people to your home after an Easter service on Good Friday or Easter Day.

Here's an activity which I did with students aged  10-12 but could be used with teens or adults.  After reading Psalm 23 from the Bible and underlining and or coloring in key words or phrases, the students were asked to write their own version of the psalm using the template below.
.
FILL THE GAPS WITH YOUR VERSION OF THE PSALM
PSALM 23
 THE LORD THE …………………………..

A song of  …………………...

23 The Lord is my ………………….
    I have everything I need.
2. He gives me rest ………………………..
    He leads me to …………………….
3. He gives me new strength.
For the good of his name,
    he leads me on ……………………….
4. Even if I walk
    through a very ……………………….,
I will not be afraid
    because you are with me.
Your ………………..    and your ………………..     comfort me.
5. You prepare a meal for me
    in front of …………………….
You …………………………………...
You give me more than …………………….

6. Surely your ………………………….. will be with me
    all my life.
And I will live in the house of the Lord forever.

FURTHER DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1) What part of this Psalm-poem do you like? Please explain why.

2) Have you ever lain down on green grass or in a field?
What do you think it would feel like?

3) Is there a part of the Psalm that scares you? Why?

4) Is there a part that you find comforting? Why?

5) What do you think David thought God was like?

6) What do you think God is like?

7) Why do you think it is sometimes hard to describe who God is?

8) Why do you think people have different ideas about who God is and what he does?
